Applying AI to help solve society’s biggest challenges and improve lives
As AI redefines what’s possible, it also creates new ways to be helpful. Helping solve society’s challenges has always been core to our work.
AI can be applied in ways that benefit humanity. Our mission is to demonstrate AI’s societal benefit by enabling real-world value, with projects spanning work in accessibility, science, education, economic impact, and society. We believe that the best way to drive positive change in underserved communities is by partnering with change-makers and the organizations they serve.
AI-driven solutions to help everyone reach their full potential
Project Relate
Google’s Project Relate is an Android app that helps individuals with non-standard speech communicate more easily. By offering speech-to-text transcription, clear voice repetition, and Google Assistant interaction, it enables users to express themselves and manage daily tasks effectively.
Monk Skin Tone
In partnership with Harvard professor and sociologist Dr. Ellis Monk, Google released a new skin tone scale designed to be more inclusive of the spectrum of skin tones we see in our society. The Monk Skin Tone Scale will help us and the tech industry at large build more representative datasets so we can train and evaluate AI models for fairness, resulting in features and products that work better for people of all skin tones.
Language Inclusion
There are over 7,000 languages spoken around the world. To date, few of these languages have been well represented online. To capture the diversity of how we communicate globally, Google has built an AI model to help people connect and better understand the world around them.
Rapid response powered by AI innovation
Flood forecasting
Our AI-powered flood forecasting platform can predict when and where riverine flooding will occur up to seven days in advance.
Green Light
Our AI tool measures driving trends at intersections and develops recommendations that city traffic engineers can use to optimize the timing of traffic light changes to reduce stop-and-go traffic.
Wildfire tracking
Our alerts, simulation models, and wildfire risk forecasting systems are helping provide accurate wildfire information to affected communities and fire authorities.
Project Contrails
We’re working with the airline industry to develop contrail forecast maps using AI-based predictions, allowing pilots and airlines to optimize routes that avoid creating climate-warming contrails.
Calling in Our Corals - SurfPerch
Our AI model can expedite the process of finding solutions to preserve and restore coral reefs, developed in collaboration with Google researchers and enriched by contributions from citizen scientists on the Calling in Our Corals.
